TERRALIFT uses a long, narrow probe and
an integral pneumatic hammer to penetrate the soil to depths of three to six
feet, depending upon the depth of the leach field. It then forces air
into the soil at a controllable rate fracturing the soil. This creates
a network of fissures and cracks which breaks up the biomat that has formed
on the walls of the trenches, and loosens compact soil in the leach field.
TERRALIFT adds a new dimension to the process by using a second tank and parallel system that simultaneously injects air and non-biodegradable polystyrene beads into the fissures and cracks that have been opened, thus maintaining the passages for the percolation of liquid away from the trenches. Because air tends to follow the path of least resistance, both the air and the beads will move horizontally and vertically upward through the soil. The beads will keep the air and water passages open to ensure proper leaching and transpiration on a long term basis.
